LSC Students Compete at Winter World University Games

Lake Superior College students Jessica Schultz and Chris Plys are attending the Winter World University Games in Torino, Italy as members of Team USA. Schultz is a member of the women’s curling team and Plys is a member of the men’s curling team.

Schultz is returning to Torinio, where she competed in the last Winter Olympics. She is the skip on the team. She has earned numerous honors including a siver medal as a member of the U.S. team at the 2005 World Championships.

Plys has competed at the state, U.S. and World Junior Championships. He has been on U.S. Junior National Championship teams in 2006 and 2003.

The curling teams include members from other regional colleges, including UMD, Hibbing Community College and Bemidji State University.

Fire Instructor Honored by City

Dan Lattner has been named a recipient of a Clarence Maddy award. The award, which is given by the City of Duluth, recognizes outstanding performance. Individuals are nominated by their peers or supervisors. He received the honor at the State of the City activities on Monday, January 8. Lattner teaches in the Fire Tech and Fire Hourly programs.

Oberstar Meets with Two-Year Colleges

Rep. Jim Oberstar met with 8th Congressional District MnSCU community college presidents and representatives at Lake Superior College in late December to discuss the priorities of the incoming Congress. Discussion centered on the higher education bill and legislation relating to job training and education in transportation, including aviation, and homeland security. Oberstar, a 16th term incumbent, is Minnesota’s longest serving member in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. The committee has jurisdiction over America’s surface transportation; freight and passenger rail; the inland waterway system, including the St. Lawrence Seaway; international maritime commerce; the Economic Development Administration; the U.S. Corps of Engineers’ support of the nation’s water resources; and the federal clean water program.

“Get Ready, Get Credit” Program Provides Free College Credit Testing for High School Students

Qualified junior and senior high school students can now test for college credits free. The Minnesota State Legislature has funded the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams for high school students through June 30, 2007. Up to six exam fees ($60 each) are covered regardless of the score if students are referred by a high school counselor.

CLEP testing includes 34 introductory college-level exams in general education subjects that are usually part of the first two years of college. Many high school students take CLEP exams in subject areas they are excelling at, including precalculus, algebra, sciences, social sciences and history, humanities and business.

Lake Superior College’s Center for Lifelong Learning offers CLEP testing. An administrative fee of $20 per test will be charged but the $60 test fee is waived.

“We encourage high school juniors and seniors to take advantage of this great opportunity,” said Marie Carter Brooks, Center director. “Students can check with their high school counselors and contact us.” A CLEP exam sampler is available online at www.collegeboard.com/clep

LSC’s Virtual Campus Offers Grandma’s Marathon Course; Olympic Hopeful Katie Koski to Teach Course

Lake Superior College is offering the chance to train for and run Grandma’s Marathon or the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon for college credit while working with a world-class athlete. More than 17,000 runners and 50,000 race fans from around the world are expected to participate in June 15, 2007 Grandma’s Marathon weekend.

This year, native Duluthian Katie Koski will teach the online physical education course. Koski is a champion runner who is in training for the Beijing Olympics team trials. She was asked to teach the online course for Lake Superior College because of her experience training for and completing Grandma’s Marathon. “I have run Grandma’s eight times finishing 6th, 7th and 10th respectively with a 2:42 best,” said Koski. “I feel very connected to the Duluth running community and Grandma’s Marathon.”

Koski was named to the 2007? World Cup 100k Team based on her performance at the Edmund Fitzgerald Race in 2005. Although she is only thirty-three years old, this is her twentieth year of competitive running.

“The beauty of running for me is its simplicity,” explained Koski. “One only needs a decent pair of shoes, a path and a vision even if the vision is simply to get from here to there. She continued, “I like to compete and do well in races, but more importantly I find beauty in the movement itself and the people running has brought into my life. Running is a great teacher, and I have learned much about myself by lacing up shoes each day and heading down some path.”

Koski’s goal is to achieve the Olympic Trails Standard at Grandma’s this June. This will enable her to compete in the Women’s Olympic Trials in Boston April of 2008. If she runs the standard, sub 2:47, she will begin to prepare for her third U.S. Women’s Olympic Trials.

Lake Superior College’s Virtual Campus PE courses incorporate regional sporting events. The courses include Grandma’s Marathon held in Duluth, Minnesota every June, the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race held in February in Hayward, Wisconsin, and the NorthShore Inline Marathon held on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior in September. The courses provide race training and nutritional information in addition to history, etiquette and basic skills.

Deb Johnson Hired as Lake Superior College Foundation Director

Deb Johnson has been hired as the foundation director for Lake Superior College. She will be responsible for managing all the Foundation activities, including fundraising, scholarship endowments and foundation special event planning.

Johnson comes to Lake Superior College from Schering Plough where she worked to promote cardiovascular drug therapy. Her fundraising background includes working with the Junior League of Duluth, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwa, the South Mississippi Humane Society and the Lyn Meadows Discovery Center.

The LSC Foundation’s mission is to support the educational, cultural, and service goals of Lake Superior College by acting as its designated friend and fund-raiser. The Lake Superior College Foundation is the center for creatively developing business, community, and college resources, supporting student needs, and promoting excellence in teaching and learning.

Custom Fire Apparatus Donates Truck to Firefighting Program

Custom Fire Apparatus of Osceola, Wisconsin has donated a used fire engine to LSC's Emergency Response Training Center. The 9000 Series Ford chassis built by General Fire Apparatus served the Duluth Fire Department since it was built. Custom Fire won the bid to replace an existing fire engine and they donated this vehicle to LSC after taking it in trade from the city.

Acclaimed Chinese Artist to Teach at Lake Superior College

Wenzhi Zhang, one of the most acclaimed artists in China will be teaching four Art classes at Lake Superior College this spring. Wenzhi (pronounced Wen-gee) will be teaching two ceramics classes and two sculpture courses in the semester that starts Wednesday, January 17. A faculty member at Guangzhow Academy of Fine Art, she previously taught courses at LSC during the spring semester of 2005.

Professor Wenzhi Zhang is shown in front of the ceramic mural that she created for the Ceramics Museum in Foshan. The mural covers several walls in the courtyard outside the museum. A great deal of her artwork is on display at the museum, including many pieces created for the sole purpose of demonstrating techniques of Chinese artists from many centuries ago.

James Berg Editor of "Isherwood on Writing"

James Berg, dean of liberal arts and sciences at Lake Superior College, is the editor of the newly published “Isherwood on Writing.” Published by the University of Minnesota Press, the collection of lectures covers the period in Christopher Isherwood’s life in the 1960s when he gave a series of lectures at California universities on the theme, “A Writer and His World.” Isherwood (1904-1986) was a major figure in twentieth-century fiction and the gay rights movement.

Susan Brashaw Recognized with Online Faculty Excellence Award

Susan Brashaw has won the first annual Faculty Excellence Award for LSC Online for FY07. This award is tied to the annual Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning & Technology given at the annual International Conference on College Teaching and Learning hosted by Florida Community College at Jacksonville. Susan will make a presentation in April at the conference and receive her award. Accompanying Susan to the conference will be the two runners-up for the award: Victoria Hutson and Hanna Erpestad. Also nominated for the award were Theresa Hornstein, Cherie Hamilton, and Lawrance Bernabo.

LSC student Joe Atol organized a LSC hockey team this fall. The remainder of the season includes a Jan. 7, 9 p.m. DECC Arena game playing the Gilbys/ACES/Sammys team; a Jan. 14, 10:15 p.m.DECC Arena game playing the Greenmill/Slumberland team; Jan. 21, 6:30 p.m. DECC Arena playing the T-BONZ team and Jan. 28, 7:45 p.m. in Pioneer Hall playing the ACES/Grizzlys team.

Northshore Mining Donates Bricks for Ceramics Program

The Northshore Mining Company in Silver Bay, Minnesota recently donated fire bricks to Lake Superior College’s art department. The bricks will be used to build or update kilns for LSC’s ceramics program. “We were thrilled to receive about 26 pallets of bricks. The brick will be used to restore existing kilns and to build new wood fire kilns,” said Dorian Beaulieu, ceramics instructor at the college. The bricks will help complete a wood fire kiln now under construction and be used in a kiln building course to be offered fall 2007.

The fire bricks donated by Northshore Mining were no longer used in the taconite production process. “We were happy to donate these materials to Lake Superior College,” said Warren Lind in Materials Handling for Northshore Mining. “We know they’ll be put to good use.” This is the third materials donation LSC has received from Northshore Mining in the last decade.

Ceramic Artist Ernest Miller on Campus

The LSC Art Club hosted a workshop by ceramic artist Ernest Miller. Miller lectured on Tuesday, December 12, and conducted hands-on clay demonstrations and a workshop on Wednesday, December 13.

The events, which were open to all enrolled students, were also supported by Student Life and the ceramics faculty.

Robot Demonstration and Competition

Students enrolled in the Integrated Manufacturing programs (Machine Technology, Mechanical Drafting and Design and Welding) will present a robot demonstration and competition at noon on Monday, December 18 in the commons.

The robots will attempt to pick up and transport eggs without breaking them.

LSC Students to Compete for All-USA Academic Team

Two student winners have been chosen to represent Lake Superior College in the regional and national contests for the All-USA Academic Team. USA TODAY, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society seek to honor 60 students as representatives of outstanding community college students from across the nation. First, second, and third teams of 20 students each will be announced in USA TODAY in April.

Neva Swanson, (R) is currently majoring in accounting. She is a member of the Business Professionals of America, has recently been nominated as the President of her chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, and works as a Campus Ambassador.

Samantha Voelkner (L) plans on earning an Associate of Arts degree. Besides her 4.0 grade point average, Samantha is treasurer for LSC’s Student Senate and serves on LSC’s Institutional Effectiveness Committee.

These students will be honored at the Dean’s List Reception in the spring and will receive a $500 scholarship. They will also move on to compete in the All-USA Academic Team Regional and National contests.

Art Shows in December

"Shared Dimensions," a collage and ceramics exhibit created jointly with LSC student artists and Udac Art Junction artists will run from Dec. 1 - Dec. 30. An artist's reception will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 5 from 4-6 p.m. in the LSC Art Building, second floor gallery.

For the second year, LSC art staff and students developed a creative partnership with the Udac Art Junction staff and artists. The Udac program offers innovative ways for people with disabilities to express their artistic abilities while the LSC program provides students with service learning opportunities in the community.

Udac is a non-profit organization funded by St. Louis County, other public sources and private contributions. Udac's mission is to provide customized services to people with disabilities and other challenges based on their choices.

LSC's annual student art exhibit will open Monday, Dec. 11 to Wed. Dec. 13. An artists' reception will be held on Monday, Dec. 11, 5-7 p.m. Student artists will present a wide variety of projects, including paintings, watercolors, sculpture, jewelry, two and three-dimensional design projects, digital photography and ceramics. Free and open to the public, the reception will include refreshments, and an opportunity to meet the artists

Scholastic Book Fair

Once again, the students of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) are sponsoring a Scholastic Book Fair. Children and young adult books and other fun stuff will be for sale on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, December 4-6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in LSC’s Atrium. Festival of Trees Attracts Crowds

LSC hosted the Junior League's annual Festival of the Trees on Saturday and Sunday, November 18 and 19. The event is one of the region's best attended fundraisers. The holiday craft sale attracted more than 3,500 people to campus and raised more than $36,000 for the League's civic and charitible projects.

LSC faculty member Jane Worley was a co-chair of the event this year. Congratulations to all the members of the Junior League of another successful year.

Concert Choir Premiere

LSC will host its first-ever Concert Choir concert on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Directed by Carolyn Rynex (far left) with accompanist Pam Sohriakhoof, the 14-member choir will perform a holiday program of music from around the world. Flutists Kathy Neff and Debbie Farnham, a LSC student string ensemble with Dale Rogers, and University of Wisconisn- Superior student percussionists will also be featured in the program. The concert choir is a for-credit class offered by LSC.

"Empty Bowl" Throwathon Dec.1-2

LSC will host the “Empty Bowl” Throwathon, starting on Dec. 1, Friday morning at 9 a.m., running 24 hours through the night to Sat. Dec. 2 at 9 a.m. Artists plan to make hundreds of bowls to be donated to the “Empty Bowl” fundraiser to be held on April 7, 2007. The completed bowls will be available for $15 at the Depot on April 7, 2007. A delicious variety of soups and breads are included. Proceeds benefit the Second Harvest/Northern Lakes food bank. Area artists are invited to participate in the Throwathon along with anybody who wants to help with refreshments, schlepping supplies and other duties. Wear your grubbies!

Former LSC Firefighting Student Places Second in World Competition

Sandy Solem, a firefighter with the Duluth Fire Department who recieved her fire and EMS training at Lake Superior College, is a member of a team that placed second at the World's Firefighter Combat Challenge. Minnesota Online honored with 2006 Institutional Service Award from Council for Adult and Experiential Learning

Minnesota Online, the gateway to programs and courses offered via the Internet by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, has received the 2006 Institutional Service Award from the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning. The international nonprofit organization, also known as CAEL, presented the award Nov. 10 during its international conference in Boston.

"CAEL applauds the efforts of Minnesota Online to provide students with an outstanding educational opportunity," the organization stated. "By allowing students to access the online learning opportunities provided by Minnesota State community colleges, technical colleges and universities through one Web site, Minnesota Online is working toward CAEL's mission to expand learning opportunities for adults."

Lake Superior College is a major participant in Minnesota Online.

Minnesota State Colleges and Universities to Ask State for $177 Million

Request includes initiatives for student access and success, academic innovation, technology.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees today approved a legislative budget request that seeks a $177 million increase for the 2008-2009 biennium and limits annual tuition increases to an average of no more than 4 percent across the system in each of the next two years.

"This request is tightly focused on initiatives that will build a stronger workforce and help the state of Minnesota stay competitive," Chancellor James H. McCormick said. "We are asking the state to invest in initiatives to expand recruitment and retention of students traditionally underserved in higher education; support academic excellence and innovation, especially in the areas of science and math; and make crucial technology updates."

President Calls for FAN Support

Minnesota State Colleges and Universities form Friends Action Network (FAN) to urge state leaders to support the Minnesota's public higher education systems.

LSC President Kathleen Nelson is urging faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members to become FANs of Minnesota’s State Colleges and Universities.

“Minnesota's future and continued economic health depend on access to affordable, quality public higher education. We will need to work together to convince the people of Minnesota and legislators that it is time to reinvest in our colleges and universities,” Nelson explains.

LSC Participates in Survey of Student Use of Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs

Lake Superior College is one of 12 Minnesota colleges and universities that participated in a survey of the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among students, in an effort to improve academic success and student health.

According to the survey, the high-risk drinking rate (consuming five or more drinks at one sitting within the past two weeks) was 45 percent among students 18 to 24 and 35.7 percent among students over the age of 24. Daily use of tobacco was 14.6 percent among younger students and 21.9 percent among the older group.

The research was conducted in February of 2006. Surveys were sent to 1,310 full-time students at LSC and 541 (41.5 percent) responded. Responses from students age 18 through 60 are included in the LSC data.

Funded by the Hennepin Medical Society and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, the survey is designed to help measure knowledge, attitudes and behaviors among college-age students. LSC's Fall Open House was a big success, attracting hundreds of potential students and their families. The event included presentations, information booths, tours and refreshments.

A health care demonstration in the Commons was one of the highlights of the Fall Open House. Students and faculty from several health care programs provided an interactive patient scenario. Billed as "Health Care Experience Theater," the demo attracted many interested onlookers. Nursing instructor Dorothy Rico is pictured above.

Art faculty member Ji Ye sketched portraits of visitors during the open house. Ji Ye teaches drawing and painting courses. He is a native of China.

LSC Hosts Health Fair and Great American Smokeout

Students and the public are invited to a free Health Fair and Great American Smokeout event on Thursday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lake Superior College Commons. More than 45 presenters will be available with free services including free chair massages, headache management help, blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests, diabetic screening, bone density tests, hemoglobin checks, and health insurance eligibility checks.

Tekne Awards honor key innovators in Minnesota technology industries

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system has received a 2006 Tekne Award for developing Minnesota Online, the system's gateway to more than 4,700 course sections and 150 programs offered via the Internet.

The Tekne Awards recognize Minnesota's technology users and developers in innovation, development, education, commercialization and management of technology in Minnesota. They are presented each year by the Minnesota High Tech Association and Minnesota Technology, Inc., in partnership with LifeScience Alley.

"This year's recipients have truly proven their leadership and dedication to technological development, which ultimately improves the quality of life for Minnesotans and helps secure Minnesota's place as a global player in technology-based markets," said Kate Rubin, president of the high tech association.

Minnesota Online (www.minnesotaonline.org) is the state's largest public provider of online education and is growing rapidly. During 2005-2006, nearly 42,000 students took Minnesota Online courses from one of the system's 32 institutions. That's up from about 25,000 students the previous year.

Lake Superior College is member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system and one of the largest providers of online courses to Minnesota Online.

LSC Students Build Hockey Rink in Duluth Heights

Lake Superior College’s first year building construction students are hard at work on a community service project this week. Approximately 20 students, under the supervision of building construction instructor John Calcaterra, are constructing a new hockey rink for the Duluth Heights Hockey Association.

“This project provides an opportunity for students to test their skills as they contribute to a popular athletic program that serves hundreds of children in the community,” Calcaterra explained. “It’s a great example of service learning.”

The hockey association plans to donate $3,000 to the Lake Superior College Foundation toward the establishment of a scholarship program for LSC building construction students.

Lake Superior College Online Sponsors Nordic Spirit Ski Event

Lake Superior College and LSC Online are the title sponsors of this year’s Nordic Spirit Ski Race and Tour. The event will take place on the scenic and challenging Spirit Mountain/Magney-Snively ski trail system on Sunday, January 28, 2006.

The Nordic Spirit Ski Race and Tour is conducted by Duluth XC Ski Club. It features three race categories, a 10k Classic event and 13 and 25k freestyle races, providing opportunities for both serious racers and recreational skiers “

Lake Superior College Surgical Technology Program Earns “Top 20” Status

The Lake Superior College Surgical Technology program has earned a “Top 20” designation from the Accreditation Review Committee on Surgical Technology. The honor is bestowed on programs with the highest student scores in the annual Program Assessment Examination (PAE). The results of the class of 2006 indicate that the LSC students are among the nation’s best-trained new surgical technologists. Lake Superior College is the only Minnesota institution listed this year.

The PAE is a 150-question test that is given to all program students as close as possible to graduation. It is intended to determine how well the program met the curriculum guidelines set by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) and its Accreditation Review Committee on Surgical Technology.

The LSC Surgical Technology program was also on the “Top 20” list in 2004. There are currently 411 AST member programs that participate in the PAE.

“We are proud of this accomplishment because it is based on our student’s performance in a standardized test,” said Candace Barnack, LSC’s vice president of academic affairs. “It validates our quality of curriculum and instruction and is evidence that our students are ready to contribute to the health care system."

Fall Enrollments Rise at Minnesota State Colleges and Universities

Enrollments at the 32 member institutions of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System rose slightly over the last year, officials said recently, as they released the system's 30th day enrollment figures.

This fall, the system has 173,016 students, an increase of 2,262 students from last fall's enrollment of 170,754. That is a 1.3 percent increase. Enrollment increased at 17 colleges and four state universities and decreased at nine colleges and three state universities. Overall, enrollment was up by 2.4 percent at the community and technical colleges and down about 0.6 percent at the seven state universities.

Lake Superior College is among the colleges at which enrollment decreased. According to the report, LSC is experiencing a two percent drop this fall.

The full-year-equivalent enrollment in credits is projected to increase by 0.6 percent for the current year. (Full-year-equivalent enrollment is calculated by adding the credits taken by all students and dividing by the number of credits considered to be a full-time course load - 30 credits per year for undergraduates and 20 credits for graduate students.)

Hunt Family Funds Full Time Scholarship

Foundation Receives $25,000 Endowment

Lake Superior College has received $25,000 from the Hunt Family to set up an endowed scholarship for the LSC Foundation. The new Hunt Family Scholarship will provide an award for a full time student each academic year. In its first year, $10,000 will be awarded through the scholarship with $4,000 awarded annually in the following years.

"We are so appreciative of the Hunt family's generosity," said Dr. Kathleen Nelson, president of Lake Superior College. "It is a benchmark for our Foundation to offer a scholarship that provides a deserving student a fully paid education each year."

"Some of our employees have children who thoroughly enjoyed the education they received at Lake Superior College. Disability Awareness Speaker Matt Glowacki

Matt Glowacki, a Paralympic Sit-Volleyball team member for eight years, a small business owner, and professional speaker, was born without legs. Just listing those things might put him in the classification of motivational, but he just views his life as normal. Matt’s simple motto is, “Walking is overrated!” His message to people is “Please don’t be so surprised when people who are living lives different from yours achieve success. I haven’t done anything anyone else couldn’t do in my situation.”

Matt believes everyone has a responsibility to use the gifts they have to be a productive individual to for themselves and society. “It’s not like I’ve overcome anything. There are people walking around with more hardships and hidden disabilities then I have.” Glowacki
claims those people are the real inspirations.

Glowacki will speak on the Lake Superior College and Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College campuses. Both events, held on Monday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. in the Commons at LSC and 1 p.m. at Fond du Lac’s Minitorium, are free and open to the public. Dr. Kathleen Nelson, LSC President, Selected for Leadership Award

Dr. Kathleen Nelson, President of Lake Superior College, is among ten women selected for the Northland’s NewsCenter “Women in Leadership” awards.

Nelson received the honor at a banquet on Wednesday, October 11. She was also profiled on newscasts on KBJR TV and KDLH TV, the sponsors of the award, and in the regional magazine Area Woman.

The Awards recognize women who have excelled to provide uncommon leadership and strive to be positive examples. A committee of community-conscious business leaders from the region served by KBJR and KDLH TV considered nominations from the public. Judging was based upon the ability of the nominator to articulate, with specific examples and information, the reasons why the nominee should be considered. Dr. Nelson received multiple nominations, including entries from a student leader, an employee and her daughter.

Highlights of Nelson’s long career includes numerous awards and higher education leadership positions, including her selection by the Minnesota State Colleges Student Association as the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities President of the Year in 2006 and her membership on the Board of Trustees of the Higher Learning Commission.

“It is a great honor to be recognized in this way,” Nelson explained. “I’m humbled by the support of students, staff and my family.”

Robert Erickson's Fifth Bike Tour Raises $31,015

Robert Erickson, a former Minnesota State Colleges and Universities trustee, has raised $31,015 on his fifth annual 2,300-mile bike tour to create scholarships for part-time students. To date, Erickson has raised more than $290,000 over five years.

Erickson, 60, rode his bicycle to the 53 state college and university campuses. He was received with police escorts, receptions and other fund-raising efforts. Many supporters, including some college and university presidents and David Paskach, chair of the system's Board of Trustees, joined him. Paskach rode 101 miles with Erickson from Austin to Winona.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Foundation and college and university foundations will distribute scholarships with donations generated from the bike tour.

During his month-long bike ride, Erickson spoke about the challenges of part-time adult students who he says are not treated fairly by Minnesota's current financial aid program.

Erickson visited LSC on August 23, as part of the tour.

New Personal Trainer Program Prepares Students to Take National Certification Exam

Lake Superior College will begin offering a new 30-credit Personal Trainer program spring semester. The program will prepare students to work in a variety of health and fitness settings. It includes instruction in anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, nutrition, health psychology, as well as coursework on various sports and training techniques. Participants will learn to lead and demonstrate safe and effective methods of exercise and motivate individuals to begin and continue healthy behaviors.

Skiers Earn College Credit for Training, Competing

The American Birkebeiner® is the largest and most prestigious cross-country ski marathon in North America. This February some of competitors crossing the finish line at the Birkebeiner will earn two college credits as participants in an innovative physical education course offered by the Lake Superior College (LSC) Virtual Campus.

LSC is offering "X-Country Ski Marathon" (PE-1655-55), an online course intended to prepare participants to compete in the world famous "Birkie." The class will provide race training and nutritional information in addition to history, race etiquette and basic Nordic skiing skills. The students will prepare for the event over 12 weeks, beginning December 2006, then ski the Birkie (51 kilometers) or the associated Kortelopet (23 kilometers) on Saturday, February 24, to complete the course requirements. Students may substitute another race of similar length if they wish.

Each year nearly 8,000 skiers of all ages and abilities participate in the American Birkebeiner. The race was established in 1973 and has grown into a premier event, attracting the world's elite skiers as well as thousands of recreational enthusiasts. Held on trails near Cable and Hayward, Wisconsin, the American Birkebeiner, more than any other event, is responsible for the growth and popularity of the sport of cross-country skiing as we know it today.

LSC will also sponsor an activity tent during the Feb. 22-24 race weekend.

"The American Birkebeiner is one of the most famous and long-running sporting events in the upper Midwest, attracting participants from all over the globe, as well as more than 15,000 spectators annually," Barry Dahl, LSC Vice President for technology and the Virtual Campus explains. "They are also a great partner. The Birkie staff provides ongoing assistance with the development and promotion of our course, helping to make it an excellent educational experience."

LSC faculty member Joshua Tesch, a former Kortelopet champion, will teach the class. He encourages both beginners and veterans to sign up for the course.

Katie Frerker, an Idaho resident who completed the course last year, finished first in her class in the Kortelopet last year. She says, "By taking the online Birkie class, I was able to beat my personal goal. It really paid off for me as a first-time racer."

The two-credit course, which is widely accepted for transfer, is available to any student wishing to earn college credit for skiing the race. In addition to standard tuition and fees, an additional $50 fee will be charged for this course. Enrolling in the LSC course provides each student with a guaranteed entry into either the Birkie or the Kortelopet.

Over the past two years, Lake Superior College has offered similar courses in cooperation with Grandma's Marathon and the NorthShore Inline Marathon. The League for Innovation in the Community College recently recognized LSC's online physical education courses, naming them an "Innovation of the Year" for 2006.

Student Senate Conducts Election Day Voter Registration Drive

"Help Wanted" tells the story of impoverished immigrants who came to Minnesota to seek a better life and to help their family in Mexico. Three actors playing multiple roles present scenes depicting life in Mexico, a dangerous border crossing, unionizing efforts, detention by the INS, and demonstrations in support of hotel workers. This satirical piece demonstrates the plight of workers whose labor is needed in Minnesota, but who risk harsh treatment and inequities when trying to fill this need.

Based in St. Paul's West Side Latino community, Teatro del Pueblo's mission as a non-profit theater company is to promote cultural pride in the Latino community, to develop and support Latino talent, to educate the community at large about Latino culture and to promote cultural diversity in the arts.

The scholarships are the Auto Service Technician Scholarship, the Broadcasting-Media Studies Scholarship, the Center for Student Development Scholarship, the Hilltop Lions Scholarship, the Patricia and Edward Nelson Northern Waters Scholarship, and the newly established Hunt Family Scholarship.

Laurel and Hardy Fan Club Returns to LSC

The local chapter of the Sons of the Desert, the international Laurel and Hardy fan club, will hold its September meeting at Lake Superior College on Friday, September 15. The meeting will feature screenings of several short films. In addition to the Laurel and Hardy films, a Buster Keaton short will also be shown. The event will take place in the Commons, begining at 7 p.m. It's free and open to the public.

The club is hosted by LSC Student Life.

Promotional Video Viewing Scheduled

Students who participated in the production of LSC's promotional video are invited to two screenings. The 12-minute production will be shown in room E2328 at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 7, and at 11 a.m. in room E2026 on Friday, Sept. 8.

Photography for the production was done over two weeks at the end of spring semester and a few additional scenes were shot during the summer.

All interested parties are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

Bich Competes in World Triathlon

Faculty member Brian Bich finished 33rd in the World Triathlon Championships held Sat. Sept. 2 in Lausanne, Switzerland. The event attracted more than 1,600 participants from 61 countries. Bich was fifth in his age category with a time of 2:11.30. The triathlon includes a one-mile swim, a 20-kilometer bike ride and a five-kilometer run.

The Campus Ambassadors are a specially trained and qualified cohort of 11 students who are strongly committed to providing resources, educational services, and peer advisement to enrolled students, prospective students, applicants and visitors. The Campus Ambassador Team prepared for the semester by working the Skyview Ropes course and rock-climbing wall at the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in August. While suspended two stories off the ground, team members, (Katrina Norris in upper right photo) crossed bridges, balanced on wire, and flew through the air. According to Campus Ambassador Team Advisor and Coordinator of Student Recruitment Emily Chapinski, the training challenged conventional thinking and solidified team spirit. "The training allowed the Campus Ambassadors to build leadership skills and have an absolutely great time doing it." The training was made possible through Student Life.

Free-wheeling Biking Bob Makes Campus Stop

Robert Erickson, also known as Biking Bob, stopped for a brief reception on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at Lake Superior College. He rode from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College and left LSC to continue to Two Harbors for an overnight stop. Biking Bob is on a 2,300-mile state bicycle tour to raise money and public support for part-time students.
Erickson is the chair of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Foundation.

During his 30-day trek, Erickson will tour all 53 campuses in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. He is funding the trip at his own expense. To date, Erickson has raised more than $255,000 over four years. He accepted a $2,000 check from LSC for the Trustee Erickson Part-time Student Scholarship Fund.

Faculty Member Brian Bich Triathlon Winner

Faculty member Brian Bich won his fifth straight Fitgers Brewhouse Triathlon long-course title, and placed eighth overall, in 1:38:54 to head a record field of 668. According to the Duluth News-Tribune, he's won two other triathlons outright this year, was the top amateur in another and was a dominant winner in the 40-44 division at the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships on July 8 in Kansas City, Mo. Congratulations, Brian!

Business Campers Prepare to Run City

A group of 6th, 7th and 8th graders from Duluth's Lincoln Middle School, Cloquet and Proctor took part in a week-long Business Camp at LSC. The campers prepared to run a model Exchange City by campaigning, interviewing for and learning about various jobs at the city. Jobs included mayor, judge, police officer, banking, snack shop, disc jockey and others. The camp was funded by a MnSCU math and science readiness grant and coordinated by Michelle LaPorte with the help of Junior Achievement and instructor volunteers.

Spanish Immersion Semester in Puebla, Mexico

A new semester-long Spanish immersion program in Puebla, Mexico is offered for spring 2007. The program combines an academic program with service learning and exciting cultural activities located at one of the most prestigious universities in Mexico.

Lake Superior College students will study at the renowned Universidad de las Américas in Puebla, México. The Universidad de las Américas, whose official name is Fundación Universidad de las Américas, Puebla (also known as UDLA or UDLAP), is one of the most important private universities in Mexico. Its academic programs, both in the undergraduate and graduate schools, have national and international prestige. Students will enroll in three credits through Lake Superior College (taught on-campus at the UDLA by LSC faculty) and nine credits of language/culture courses at the UDLA, including a service learning component.

Crew Volunteers Needed for Dragon Boat

The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival is an annual fundraising event organized by the Superior Rotary Club and Duluth's Harbortown Rotary Club. The race is held in the Superior Bay off Barkers Island in Superior, Wisconsin and includes a traditional dragon boat race as well as a host of other exciting and entertaining festivities. The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 26.

LSC's Student Life is sponsoring a Dragon Boat and needs volunteers for the crew. According to Director of Student Life Roger Johnson, at least two races will be held in the morning and afternoon. If the LSC crew makes it to the finals, the third race will be held early evening, so plan to spend the whole day at Barker's Island. Radiologic Technology Program Announces Graduate Awards

Congratulations to the Radiologic Technology Class of 2006. Twenty-one graduates were honored recently at an informal ceremony at LSC. These graduates have received an Associate of Applied Science degree in Radiologic Technology and are now eligible to take a national board certification exam from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Brittany Lauby of Eagan, MN received the LSC "Blue Ribbon Student of the Year" Award. This award recognizes outstanding GPA, professional and community involvement.
Laura Liljegren of Esko, MN received the Helen Shay Memorial Award sponsored by the SMDC Foundation. The Helen Shay Memorial Award recognizes excellence in clinical performance.
Linda Schubert of Duluth, MN received the Kim Chapman Memorial Award. This LSC Foundation award recognizes a high standard of professionalism and dedication.

The Challenge of the Road Home

Army National Guard officers Lieutenant Commander Rick Gerdes (right) and Chaplain Major John Morris (center) spoke to LSC staff and faculty about the emotional, physical and spiritual challenges of leaving and returning home after being deployed, trained and serving in Iraq as citizen-soldiers. The presentation was part of a state-wide education initiative to help communities understand and support returning veterans. Jean Pehl, LSC registrar, (left in photo) organized the event.

Don Pfiefer of Central Lakes College discussed the state-wide initiative he is coordinating to make higher education institutions more veteran-friendly. This includes five universities and eleven colleges in the MnSCU system which will host Veterans' Service Centers to provide a single point of contact for veterans and their families. Lake Superior College will host the new regional center with Jody Kiminski, currently with LSC Student Services, managing the Veterans' Service Center.

HOT Campers at LSC

The second day of a three-day Health Occupations Today (HOT) camp, was held July 25 at the LSC campus where a group of 8th to 10th graders learned about allied health careers and computers in healthcare with hands-on exercises. The camp was organized by a consortium of area health care providers, educators, and related service providers.

Joan Thoren New Foundation/Grants Assistant

Joan Thoren has been hired as an administrative assistant for the Lake Superior College Foundation and to support general college grant-writing activities. Thoren previously served as an assistant in the Crow Wing County Planning and Zoning Department where she worked on land use enforcement issues. Prior to that job, Thoren taught for 15 years at a math, science and technology magnet elementary school in Morris, Minnesota. She and her husband, Allan, are originally from Ely, Minnesota.

MnSCU Board Elects Officers

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees recently elected officers for the coming year. David Paskach, Marshall, will serve as board chair; Clarence Hightower, Plymouth, will serve as vice chair; and Michael Boulton, Porter, will be treasurer. Their one-year terms begin August 1.

Paskach is the vice president of programs for the Southwest Initiative Foundation, one of the six regional foundations in greater Minnesota created by the McKnight Foundation. Paskach was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2002 for a six-year term expiring June 30, 2008.
Hightower is the president and chief executive officer of the Minneapolis Urban League. He was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2002 for a six-year term expiring June 30, 2008. Boulton, one of three student representatives on the board, is pursuing a master's degree in urban and regional studies at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He was appointed to the board seat for a state university student for a two-year term ending June 30, 2007.

Michael Miller New Copy Center Coordinator

Aviation, Health and Business Camps at LSC

Eighth graders from the Proctor Middle School and Duluth’s Lincoln Middle School are attending camp at Lake Superior College to learn about careers in aviation, healthcare and business. Practical math applications are incorporated in the curriculum. The camps include the Aviation Careers, July 3-8,; Healthcare Careers Camp, July 10-14 and Business Careers Camp, August 7-11.

The camps will be team-taught by high school and college faculty. The camps provide the opportunity for faculty to learn more about young people’s interest in potential career and academic choices and learning styles. The students selected for the camps had to meet certain criteria and write a short essay.

“We found there are big gaps in career information and student academic preparation from middle school to high school,” said Michelle LaPorte, LSC High School Connections program coordinator. “We hope to influence and help eighth graders consider early on career choices and the math and science courses they need to take in school before coming to college.”

Roquet Selected for Luoma Leadership Academy

Deanne Roquet, a full-time biology and environmental science faculty member, has been selected to participate in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Luoma Leadership Academy.

The academy is an 18-month program designed to nurture leadership talent for the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. Selected employees are from 28 of the system's institutions and Office of the Chancellor. Participants include department and faculty deans, human resource directors, business managers, chief financial officers, and faculty and staff who aspire to leadership positions.

LSC Alumni Association Seeks Members

The Lake Superior College Alumni Association has been
re-activated after a several year hiatus. The LSC Alumni Association is made up of former students of the college, regardless of when they attended or for how long. Its goal is to serve and expand the existing alumni pool by providing
programs and events that will maintain a tie between the college and its
alumni.

Former students of the following colleges are eligible to join the Alumni Association:

“Lake Superior College today is much different from the college of 1995, the year I graduated, or from 1985 or 1965,” said Alumni Committee Chair David Boe. “Many former students like me will be interested in reconnecting with the college to find out how it has changed over the years. The Alumni Association gives them that opportunity.”

The initial goal of the association is to invite people to fill out the alumni profile at the college's website. “There will be opportunities to join the Alumni Association Leadership Committee, volunteer for special events, attend workshops or activities at the campus, or donate time and expertise for seminars or presentations,” said Boe.

Community Leaders Appointed to Diversity Council

Thirteen community leaders have been appointed to the newly formed Community Action Diversity Council of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. The group, which met recently for the first time, is charged with providing advice and counsel on the diversity aspects of the system's new four-year strategic plan.

"This council represents an impressive array of business professionals, community leaders and educators who will greatly enhance our diversity efforts," said Chancellor James H. McCormick.

"Although we have 26,000 students of color - more than any other higher education system in the state - too many young people and adults from historically underserved and underrepresented groups still do not have access to and achieve success in higher education," McCormick said. "We simply must redouble our efforts to provide opportunities so all citizens can fulfill their potential. It is the right thing to do for our citizens, and it is the smart thing to do for the state's economic vitality. I have no doubt this council will provide invaluable insights and guidance."

The diversity plan calls for the colleges and universities to enroll and graduate more students from these populations and to increase the number of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities faculty, staff and administrators from underrepresented groups.

The members are: Bescye Burnett, Zimmerman, pastor of Blessed Cross Church; Colette Campbell Stuart, Falcon Heights, founder and principal of Textures Consulting; George Himango, Duluth, desegregation officer for the Duluth public schools; Heladio Zavala, St. Cloud, senior management analyst for United Migrant Opportunity Services; Jesse Bethke Gomez, St. Paul, president of Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio; Kao Ly Ilean Her, St. Paul, executive director of the Council on Asian-Pacific Minnesotans; Karina Higareda, Coon Rapids, business development coordinator for the Anoka Hennepin Credit Union; Maria Skora, Eagan, training manager for Lloyd's Barbecue; Mary Al Balber, St. Paul, an attorney with the City of Minneapolis; Mary Gorfine, Rochester, coordinator of the Olmstead County Youth Program; Mary T. Howard, St. Cloud, a psychologist with the St. Cloud Veterans Affairs Medical Center; Raúl Vázquez, Willmar, retention coordinator and health outreach worker for the West Central Integration Collaborative; and Readus Fletcher, St. Paul, director of economic opportunity, Minority Business Development and Retention for the City of St. Paul.

The members were chosen because they have shown an interest in educational access and opportunity for all Minnesotans. The council is expected to meet quarterly.

LSC Expands Music Offerings; Hires Rynex

Lake Superior College will expand its music classes with several new courses. A new music ensemble, the College Choir, will provide students and community members the opportunity to sing and earn college credit. The choir will rehearse Tuesdays from 3 p.m. to 4:50 p.m., beginning August 29. There will be at least one public performance of the group at Lake Superior College.

Carolyn Rynex has been hired by LSC to conduct the choir, teach general music courses, and provide private vocal lessons. Rynex is a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota Duluth's (UMD) master's program in vocal performance, where she studied with Rachel Inselman. Originally from Illinois, Rynex has more than twenty years of experience teaching voice, piano, and choir to all ages. She is also the music director at St. Andrew's by the Lake, Duluth, and an adjunct instructor of voice at UMD and at the Fond du Lac Community and Tribal College, Cloquet. Rynex is an active part of the Twin Ports music community, having performed as a soloist with the Arrowhead Chorale and the recent joint University of Minnesota production of La Boheme.

President Kathy Nelson Elected to Higher Learning Commission Leadership Roles

The Board of Trustees of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the accrediting body for more than 1100 public and private higher education institutions in 19 states, has elected Lake Superior College President Kathleen Nelson as Vice Chair/Chair Elect for FY07. In FY08 she will become the Board of Trustees' Chair.

Dr. Nelson has served as a peer reviewer for the Commission since 1992. She was elected three years ago to the 15-member Board by her fellow higher education chief administrators. She has served for two years as the Chair of the Board Development Committee and will continue to serve an additional two years to fulfill these new leadership roles.

“My upcoming work with the Commission promises to be a high point in my career,” said President Nelson. “I am proud to serve in this capacity on behalf of higher education students, employees and institutions.”

New Faces Around Campus

Rob Waksdahl has joined the business staff as director of business services. He was previously the bursar/credit manager at the University of Wisconsin-Superior for six years.

Suzanne Olsen has joined the business staff as an accountant. She was previously the finance director for the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project
for six years.

Bruce Wolfe has joined the computer service team in a technical support role. Wolfe was previously a computer student at LSC.

Training to Help Returning Military

During the Afghanistan and Iraqi conflicts, approximately 15,000 Minnesota personnel from the active duty military, reserve military and the Army and Air National Guard have been called to serve their country. This is the largest single deployment of Guard personnel called to active duty since World War II.

Training to understand and help these military members before, during and after service will be provided Aug. 3, 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Lake Superior College in Room 2410. The training will be provided by Major John Morris and an Army National Guard Reintegration Team who provide training at many colleges and universities in Minnesota. A community training session will also be held Aug. 3 at the Duluth VFW from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Barry Dahl Receives National Innovation Award

The League for Innovation in the Community College has announced its “Innovations of the Year” for 2006 and a Lake Superior College Virtual Campus project is among the winners.

The League recognized Lake Superior College for developing outstanding online learning opportunities that tie together distance education with distance athletic events. In each of the three classes, students train via an Internet-delivered course and training program for marathon-length events. The final exam is participation in either Grandma’s Marathon (running), the NorthShore Inline Marathon (skating), or the American Birkebeiner (Nordic skiing). LSC has negotiated exclusive relationships with these three world-class events, which are among the largest and best-known competitions in North America. In the first year, 87 students signed up for the courses from forty different cities and five states.

Barry Dahl, Lake Superior College’s vice president for technology and the Virtual Campus, was selected to receive the 2006 Innovation Award for his work in planning, designing, and implementing three unique online physical education courses.
